Ibtilaa opens the door through which waswaas enters.
"The greatest battles are not external but internal. The whispering of Shaytaan exploits the moment of weakness that trial creates." — Ayatollah Jawadi Amoli
Waswaas al-Khannas — Anatomy of the Whisper (The Attack)
Jinn Shayateen
- Iblis & his progeny
- Khannas — the retreater: withdraws when Allah is remembered; returns when heedlessness (ghaflah) returns
- Operates through suggestion, not compulsion — free will remains intact (Mizan)
- Exploits heedlessness/ghaflah (Tasneem, Ayatullah Jawadi Amoli)
Human Shayateen
- The human devil is more dangerous — it wears the face of the friend (Tasneem)
- The social environment is a battleground of whispers (Tabatabai)
The Nafs
"We know what his own self whispers to him." — Quran 50-16
- Ego, fears, delusions
- When untrained by divine discipline, the self becomes its own shaytaan (Mizan)
- The greater jihad — the most concealed
The Divine Shield — Designed for the Attack
Rabb un Nas — Nurturer of Mankind
- Protects existence & growth
- Trust in Allah's sustaining care
- Shields against: fears, anxieties, despair, ingratitude
- — Allah provides rizq; Shaytaan's first attack was based on deprivation (promising Prophet Adam eternity)
- "Nas" used as opposed to "Falaq", as whispers target human consciousness (Tabatabai)
Malik un Nas — Sovereign of Mankind
- Protects free will & authority
- Absolute authority of Allah
- Shields against: false authorities, social pressure, political despair, ego-worshipping
- Rabb can be embodied by others, but Malik is exclusive to Allah (Tabatabai)
Ilaah al-Nas — Deity of Mankind (Al-Ilaah = Allah)
- Protects heart & worship
- Only entity worthy of worship
- Shields against: hidden polytheism, doubt, hypocrisy, love of praise, spiritual arrogance
- When Shaytaan cannot corrupt deeds, he attacks the heart's intentions — the innermost chamber: the faculty of love and worship itself
"Worship is not prostration; it lies in whatever is the core of one's heart."
- — Allah's help (angels) descend after belief and steadfastness (40 days according to some scholars)
Imam Hussain as the Living Example
Imam Hussain demonstrated the presence of all three shields the moment he said:
Ridhan bi qadhaik wa tasleeman li amrik (I am pleased with Your decree and submit to Your command)
- Rabb: Complete trust in Allah as Sustainer — no fear of deprivation
- Malik: Refusing all false sovereigns — Yazid, tyranny, social pressure
- Ilaah: Pure worship; no hidden polytheism, no compromise of the heart
