The Quran as Instruction Manual
- The Quran applies across all times and contexts — it shows us the path and the solutions to any obstacles
- The lives of the prophets show us how the manual is applied
- Different prophets faced different types of trials (broad categories applicable to our lives):
| Prophet |
Trial Type |
| Prophet Lut |
Desire / Instincts |
| Prophet Shu'ayb |
Greed |
| Prophet Musa |
Fir'aun / Taghut |
| Prophet Ibrahim |
Idols |
- "Sūr": the protective wall around a city — "Surah" comes from this root; each surah carries a message that acts as a warning/protection from some danger
Key Theme 1 — Law of Divine Testing
Do the people suppose that they will be let off because they say, ‘We have faith,’ and they will not be tested
— Ali Quli Qara'i
Certainly We tested those who were before them. So Allah shall surely ascertain those who are truthful, and He shall surely ascertain the liars
— Ali Quli Qara'i
- Every claim is tested. Faith must be proved through trials.
Do those who commit misdeeds suppose that they can outmaneuver Us? Evil is the judgement that they make
— Ali Quli Qara'i
- Allah calls out the absurdity of the evil-doers' assumption
- Humans have the highest potential amongst all creations, making human shayateen more dangerous than shayateen of jinn
- Humans have all the asma' of Allah, which allows us to become khalifatullah
- Angels have limited capacity — e.g., Jibrail has the ism of ʿilm and acts accordingly
As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will absolve them of their misdeeds and We will surely reward them by the best of what they used to do
— Ali Quli Qara'i
- Allah uses لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ — "Kafir" is one who covers
- Allah will do "kufr" over the misdeeds of those who believe and do good deeds
As for those who strive in Us, We shall surely guide them in Our ways, and Allah is indeed with the virtuous
— Ali Quli Qara'i
- Allah guides through the trials
- Lesson from history: Allah's Will carries out over time. Success is not the elimination of a trial — it is the passing of the trial.
Key Theme 2 — Systems Built Without Allah are Fragile
The parable of those who take guardians instead of Allah is that of the spider that takes a home, and indeed the frailest of homes is the home of a spider, had they known
— Ali Quli Qara'i
- The ankabut (spider) is he who relies on any other than Allah (and waliullah)
